PREVIEW
Penshurst has become the first South East point-to-point to break the century barrier this season, as the seven-race card has attracted 102 entries.
The opening hunt members race at 1.30pm has a healthy eleven entries including Godstone runner-up Little Legend who has a healthy strike rate at the course. His opposition includes Seventh Hussar and Godstone Maiden winner, Fizzlestix, but this could represent Little Legend’s best chance of reaching the winners enclosure for some while.
The Club Members race has 23 entries with Godstone winner Excitable Island boasting the highest rating. However, he is not that far clear of Stuart Robinson’s impressive Parham winner Brunswick Gold, Gareth Henderson’s Horizontal Speed, his own stablemate Quick Oats, or Dale Peter’s star Wither Or Not, who has won all three of his starts this season.
The Ladies Open has thirteen entries but only four hailing from the South East, of which Tabitha Worsley is likely to have the pick between the Grissell pair Crack Of Thunder and Wor Rom, her mother’s Houseparty, or Brenda Ansell’s The Admiral Benbow. The biggest threats to the hosting party appear to be the Turner family’s Bavard Court and Higham winner Green Bank for Francesca Nimmo.
The Mens Open could see the long-awaited return of Phil Hall’s Adept Approach, who won this same contest under Charlie Marshall last season. Charlie is also jocked up to ride his mother, Charlotte’s, Conkies Lad, who chased home Gauvain at Parham last weekend. The biggest danger to these two is Godstone Open winner, Minerfortyniner, for owner-rider David Maxwell.
The Intermediate looks a fantastically competitive race and has five entries who won last time out. Georgina Howell’s Always A Chance has won his last two starts this season, including at Godstone, while Tim Underwood’s Cheltenham Mati has some cracking form this season and has won both her maiden and restricted. Nigel Padfield’s duo, Excitable Island and Quick Oats are also entered here, while the Ian Cobb trained Letskeepit Simple is entered to extend his lead in the South East Leading Horse Award, a prize that he also won last year, for his owner Michael Deasley.
The Open Maiden has thirteen entries but only two have placed form in the South East this season. Rainbow Stripes was third to Surging Seas at Charing, while Pete Bull’s The Real Scorpion was second on debut on the same day. The Cynthia Woods trained Stars Royale has fallen on both starts this season but was running big races each time, while Nick Pearce’s Roll Of The Dice was running well when being all but brought down at Charing. Nick Pearce could also run Happy Chance for owner Rick Gurney, the six-year-old has been well beaten in bumpers but, is a half-sister to top staying hurdler Unowhatimeanharry.
The concluding 2m4f Restricted could see Lickety Split and Barrafohona lock horns 12 months on since the pair dead heated in the Open Maiden. Charlie Marshall could ride the former, while he is also jocked up to ride Cynthia Wood’s mare Skiptothegoodbit, who won impressively at Hackwood Park last time out. Petra New’s Fizzlestix is entered to quickly follow up his Godstone success, while Florella could return after three years off for her trainer Nick Pearce. Another horse returning from injury is Rick Gurney’s Spiritofchartwell, while Newmarket-based James Owen could run four-year-old Royal Beekeeper who won last time out.

REVIEW
Charlie Marshall made bold strides in the South East Mens Championship on Sunday, as he kicked off the day with a winner aboard Little Legend in the opening Hunt Members race. The 13-year-old was winning for the first time in three years and it was his first victory without the assistance of his trainer, Cynthia Woods, in the saddle.
The Club Members Conditions race went to the improving Wither Or Not, from the raiding Dale Peters yard. The seven-year-old was winning for the fourth time this season but was made to work hard by Stuart Robinson and Brunswick Gold, who were attempting to follow up their Parham victory.
With nine runners, the Ladies Open offered competitive betting and Tabitha Worsley was at her best when galvanising Goodnight Vienna to win narrowly from Crack Of Thunder, who was given a similarly determined ride by Gina Andrews.
Charlie had his second winner of the day in the Mens Open, as his family’s Conkies Lad was sent off the warm 1/2 favourite having placed on both starts this season. His competition had no answers as Charlie upped the pace on the final circuit and he won by a cosy 20 lengths.
Tabitha also made it a double in the Intermediate, as she made all the running on 16/1 outsider Carry On Asian. Tabitha picked up the ride at the last moment and gave the eight-year-old an inspired front running ride to beat the two fancied horses, Cheltenham Mati and Quick Oats. The win put Tabitha comfortably clear at the head of the South East Ladies Championship.
The Open Maiden saw the most impressive winner of the day, as the Andrew Pennock trained Poyntzpass won by a distance under Evan David. The seven-year-old was having its first run for the yard having been slow to come to hand and he should be capable of following up in a restricted.
The final race of the day was the Subaru Restricted and Lickety Split came from off the pace to run out a comfortable winner. The quirky six-year-old was difficult at the start but, put in a professional display of jumping for trainer Phil Hall, who was saddling his first runner and winner since retiring from riding.
