GODSTONE PREVIEW

24 hours after the Grand National is staged at Aintree, the South East Grand National takes place at Godstone on Sunday, and entries look super competitive. The runners are headed by Benvolio, who was beaten a short head in the 2014 Welsh National and ran subsequent hunter chase winner Full Trottle to a length earlier in the season. His biggest danger could be Petra New’s The Ferbane Man, who won the long distance race at the Fontwell Hunter Chase meeting last year but was a distant last at Parham last time. Crack Of Thunder has been placed on his last four starts, including ahead of The Ferbane Man and should be suited by the step up in trip.
The race is preceded by a competitive Club Members Conditions race, which could see Brunswick Gold win a second race this season having just been beaten at Penshurst last time out. His biggest dangers could be ex-stablemate De Clare Man for Rose Grissell and Nigel Padfield’s Quick Oats, who was third in the Intermediate at Penshurst.
The Novice Riders race could see Always A Chance make it a hat trick this season, having won at the last Godstone meeting and a Novice Riders at Whitfield in the meantime. His main opponent appears to be Strollawaynow, who was a useful third to Excitable Island at the last Godstone meeting but hasn’t been sighted since.
With the ground firming up the Restricted could see Intercooler Turbo win again this season. He has placed on his last two runs on unsuitable ground and may be hard to beat back on his preferred going. Andrew Pennock could run Hi Lucy Lou, who won her maiden at this meeting last season, while Petra New’s Fizzlestix won his maiden at the course earlier this season.
The opening 2m4f Maiden seems to be in the hands of Nick Pearce, who has the two highest entries Florabell and Clondaw Nell, while the 3m Maiden could see Stars Royale run nicely for trainer Cynthia Woods.
Tickets at the gate are £12 per person but are £10 when bought in advance at sehptp.co.uk – under 16’s free.
The first point-to-point race is at 2:15PM, with pony racing commencing at 11:30AM and a side saddle dash at 1:25PM

GODSTONE REVIEW

The battle for the South East Mens Championship went up a gear at Godstone on Sunday, as Shane Roche rode two winners and two seconds from his four rides. He began his day by taking the 2m4f maiden on Libby Lawson’s Hidden Drifter, delaying his challenge until the second last and finishing very strongly to beat the odds on favourite, Florabell. This was followed by victory in the 3m6f South East Grand National aboard the Petra New trained The Ferbane Man, who was bouncing back from finishing last in the Mixed Open at Parham. He also rode Fizzlestix for Petra in the Restricted, but he could not catch up with the Andrew Pennock trained Hi Lucy Lou, who was left 20-lengths clear when Intercooler Turbo fell at the seventh and the other two runners never got closer to her. Shane’s other second came on Rocky Island in the 2m4f Club Members race, with the pair finishing runner-up to Stuart Robinson’s 12-year-old Brunswick Gold for the second meeting in a row.
Charlie Marshall maintained his advantage at the head of the leaderboard as he benefitted from Phil York being caught in traffic on the M3. The Cynthia Woods trained Stars Royale, was sent off the odds on favourite in a match race for the Open Maiden and he quickly went 15 lengths clear and stayed there to win comfortably.
The concluding Veteran & Novice Riders race saw a first victory for Benedict Shaw as he steered Strollawaynow to a comfortable success. It was only a third ride for Benedict, who was riding in the same colours that Rough Quest carried to Grand National victory in 1996.
